Library Assistant/Adult Programming Job Description

 

Reports to: Library Director/Children’s Librarian
Education: BS/BA preferred; High School or GED equivalent required
Status: Permanent Part-Time, Hourly
Hours per Week: 15 hours per week
Salary:  $15 per hour

Experience:  1 year minimum previous library or programming experience required

 

Job Summary:

Responsible for planning, organizing and implementing library services and programs for adults within the library and for the community. Embraces change and is willing to explore new ideas and creative approaches to engaging our community while providing excellent customer service to patrons in person, by telephone or electronically.  Work hours may be varied, including evenings and one weekend per month.

 

Essential Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Plans and executes programs, presentations, workshops, and participatory experiences for adult patrons. Maintains a diverse range of ongoing programs for the adult community while simultaneously introducing new programs and special events that respond to patron and community interests.
  • Contribute to large and small scale all age programming.
  • Works collaboratively with other members of the library staff to generate program ideas and coordinate development.
  • Assist with programming for children when needed especially during summer reading.
  • Participate in community events to promote the library and our services.
  • Help maintain library displays.
  • Help develop partnerships and outreach opportunities with external organizations and groups in order to increase the use of library resources and services.
  • Work cooperatively with colleagues to develop plans and initiatives that support the library’s mission and goals.
  • Tracks program attendance, evaluates program outcomes, and prepares reports.

 

Skills:

  • Ability to creatively plan and implement programs.
  • Able to recognize and set priorities, and to use initiative and independent judgment in a variety of situations.
  • Good knowledge of library terminology, practices, and services.
  • Skill in assisting library patrons with reference questions and general collection issues.
  • Skill in utilizing and assisting others in the use of computerized library systems.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships and use good judgment, initiative and resourcefulness when dealing with the public and other employees.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and present ideas orally and in writing.
  • Ability to work effectively under stress, changes in work priorities, and with frequent interruptions.
